NORWICH, Conn. – Instead of being revved up by the jolt of caffeine in strong coffee, can a spa guest enjoy coffee transformed into a relaxing, therapeutic, whole-body experience?
You bet your sweet Starbucks it can. The Spa at Norwich Inn has introduced two up-to-the nanosecond treatments that use coffee to relax and rejuvenate a tired spa guests: the Coffee Body Polish and the Anti-Cellulite Detoxifying Body Wrap.
"Guests tell me the coffee treatments do a wonderful job of softening skin," said Assistant Spa Director Danielle Knerr. "Their skin is so soft, they can't stop touching it."
The Coffee Body Polish is an invigorating service that nonetheless relaxes each and every muscle in the body with the application of a special exfoliant. The exfoliant is a blend of ground Arabica coffee that gently exfoliates pore-clogging dead skin cells and soften rough patches while natural essence oils soothe and moisturize skin; Dead Sea salt, prized for its detoxifying and regenerating properties; and the invigorating aromas of rosemary, mint and citrus oils.

The mixture, applied with a loofah, is later washed away by a Vichy shower, and the treatment is completed with an application of Coffee Blossom Essence Lotion. This 25-minute body polish costs $70.
The Anti-Cellulite Detoxifying Body Wrap begins with dull and flaky skin cells being dry-brushed from the body. The body is then covered with green coffee extract, which naturally expels caustic the caustic environmental build-up that causes cellulite and uneven skin texture. At the same time, Utane, a powerful mix of Indian herbal powders, destroys microorganisms that cause skin irritation. As guests lie in the healing confines of this therapeutic body wrap, muscles will slowly relax into a state of comfort and rest. Later, as the wrap is removed and the ingredients are rinsed from the body, guests emerge with a renewed vitality and energy -- coffee is nature's own micro-cellular stimulant. Skin feels smoother and firmer. Regular treatments may minimize the appearance of cellulite and other skin irregularities. This 80-minute treatment costs $225.

The products include Energizing Body Oil, 4.33 oz., for $22; Invigorating Body Polish, 17.6 oz. for $35; and Moisturizing Body Lotion, 8 oz, $18. The products are from Stephka, a California-based firm that developed them for the American market, modeling them after the Russian practice of using ground coffee as an exfoliant in its many traditional bathhouses.
